Grace to You and Peace From God

by Gigi October 14, 2013
written by Gigi

I already miss the beautiful women of Mountain View Community Church.
We had an amazing time at the weekend retreat at Cedar Springs Christian Retreat Center in Sumas, WA. This camp is tucked in amongst lucious farms and snuggled in the mountains and foothills near the Canadian border. Absolutely beautiful.
The grounds are landscaped with perenial gardens still hanging on to summer.
Check out the beautiful photos on their website! http://cedarspringscrc.org/

As wonderful as this setting was, it was not nearly as precious as the women with whom I had the privilege of sharing my story.
This morning when I opened my Bible to Philippians 1:2-12, I prayed this Scripture to God in honor of these new friends.

Philippians 1:2-12
2 May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.
3 Every time I think of you [Sweet sisters of Mountain View], I give thanks to my God. 4 Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy, 5 for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now. 6 And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
7 So it is right that I should feel as I do about all of you, for you have a special place in my heart. You share with me the special favor of God, both in my imprisonment [my struggles of life] and in defending and confirming the truth of the Good News. 8 God knows how much I love you and long for you with the tender compassion of Christ Jesus.
9 I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. 10 For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return. 11 May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.
12 And I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters, that everything that has happened to me here has helped to spread the Good News.

I truly believe God ordained this weekend to be a time of refreshing and developing a new trust and intimacy with Him. He showed us how to live with a grateful heart.
I will cherish this time.
Thanks God. I received so many kisses on the cheek from you all weekend that I feel the sweet touch of your love.

Lipstick kiss on white background

Sweet Kisses….

God is good. All the time.
Bless you with grace and peace from God.

Choose Joy!

by Gigi October 10, 2013
written by Gigi

This month I joined a women’s Bible study group with the theme “Choose Joy.”
Couldn’t come at a better time.
I choose JOY when my back pain won’t go away.
I choose JOY when my heart aches for some family members going through difficult financial times and I can’t fix it.
I choose JOY when I’m overwhelmed with the convergience of many deadlines and I’ve overbooked my schedule.
I choose JOY when the government is at a stalemate on our budget.
I choose JOY over worry and fret and heart palpatations.
It is raining here in Phoenix where I’m traveling with my son Gabe.
chooseJoy600
How do I choose JOY?
It’s right here in the Book of the Bible we are studying for this Flourish in the Word study.
This is a favorite from Philippians 4:4-6

Final Exhortations

4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

I pray you will choose joy today too, my friend.
Bless your day with JOY

Remember That Date?

by Gigi October 2, 2013
written by Gigi

Do you remember certain dates in your life?
Does the memory play in your head like an old movie every year when that date pops up on the calendar?
It happens to me every October 2nd.
This date changed the course of my life in many ways.
The words that come to mind when I think of October 2nd are tragedy, miracle, healing, disability, HOPE, birth, aunt, first date, roller-coaster, detour
Tragedy – Miracle – Healing – Disability – HOPE
On this date in 1935, my beautiful Mom, Helen, was a senior at Anaconda High School. She was full of life. It was just an ordinary fall day with football excitement in the air. The pep assembly was an hour away. She sat on the stage with a few friends from the orchestra preparing to tune her violin. It was nearly showtime.
And then it happened.
The heavy stage fire curtain fell from the ceiling. It slammed her to the floor.
Crushed Spine. Paralysis. Surgeries. Rehab. Hopelessness.
BUT God!
She was told she would never walk. After six months, she stood to walk again.
She was told she would never bear children. She gave birth to TEN!
She was told she would not dance. She danced at her Senior Prom.
So for me, October 2nd means HOPE for the HOPELESS.
It was the hope I held on to when my son , Gabe, was born with multiple physical birth defects.
Growing up with Mom taught me about living life with a disability.
She helped Gabe see the possible in the impossible.

Mom holding Gabe – her 20th grandchild

Birth, Aunt, Miracles
Another significant life event happened on October 2, 1971.  I was in Junior High.
My nephew Gregory Steven Devine was born. I was absolutely thrilled to be an aunt.
Such a beautiful baby, Greg grew to be a very tall (6’ 5”) and handsome man.
Greg has an incredible story of miraculous healing too! So does his beautiful daughter Kena. I’ll tell that story on another day.
So Happy Birthday Greg!
Greg Keri and Kena
First date, roller-coaster, detour
October 2, 1976 I had my first date with a college football player. This relationship was a roller-coaster ride of emotion for six years. It wasn’t a pretty story.
That October 2nd was the start of a painfully significant life-changing detour.
And for sure, that is a story for another blog.
God knows the way to our destination

God knows the way to our destination

What about you? Do you have one of those dates that drum up old memories for you?
If so, I hope you will share in the comments section.
Bless you on this date, October 2, 2013. May it bring a happy memory of Hope and Healing and Miracles…in spite of detours.
Gigi
Yesterday’s question
What is your favorite thing about the fall season?
My answer: Snuggling near a warm fire drinking a hot cup of chai tea. When I was a young girl, I loved jumping into big piles of colorful leaves. I also enjoyed the yummy crab apples from our backyard tree. But I didn’t like getting in trouble for throwing them at cars. Hitting a police car was a BAD idea. Oops! A story for another time.

October Blog Month

by Gigi October 1, 2013
written by Gigi

I promise not to put you to sleep!

I promise not to put you to sleep!

I’ve been challenged to write a blog every day during the month of October.
It’s called NaBloPoMo
No that isn’t a trecky new language – but it stands for National Blog Posting Month
It is similar to NaNoWriMo which stands for National Novel Writing Month. That happens every November in the novel writing world. Some day I will participate in NaNoWriMo so I can get this novel out of my head and onto the page.
There are all sorts of groups and sites and prompts to keep us writers writing.
NaBloPoMo gets the blogger’s fingers dancing on the keyboard. It’s especially good for someone like me who gets too busy to blog. The challenge to meet the goal will keep me going.
Check it out!  http://www.wikiwrimo.org/wiki/List_of_timed_artistic_challenges
During my own personal NaBloPoMo journey, I may not post every blog entry here at GigiMurfitt.com because I also maintain a blog for Gabriel’s Foundation of HOPE at www.GabesHOPE.org
So check out both to get the latest about what’s going on in my world.
I’m excited (and a little nervous) to be more active on my blog.
I hope you’ll meet me here for a chat or to be inspired as I write from the heart.
I’m thinking it may be as simple as posting a question to start a conversation.
It’s a new season.
It’s a new day.
So here is the question for October 1, 2013
What is your favorite thing about the fall season?
Please post your comment below.
Let me know if there are topics you’d like to see on my blog.
Here we go!
God Bless your heart
Gigi
PS – Come back here tomorrow for my answer to the question!!

A New Blog Series – Courageous Conversations – Soon!

by Gigi July 13, 2013
written by Gigi

Hello friend!
I pray you are having a warm and sunny season filled with hope and love. I have been thoroughly enjoying our warm weather here in the Northwest. And I feel deeply loved with new hope in my heart.

Hope and Love WWF

I’ve been away from my blog for a bit.  I have fresh writing ideas every day but I just haven’t made it a priority to record them here. There are many reasons why but that doesn’t matter.
I know now that I am to write here again. I also know I am to finish another book.
I want to start some courageous conversations. Many things we discuss will be from the book I’ve been working on for the last ten years. Stories of HOPE from the journals of my life. Will you join in and share your story?
I’ve been doing much work on learning to be a better wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

A whole hearted Gigi. wholeheartedbadge

Not the Gigi who wears a smile when she is actually deeply sad. (Take off the mask, Gigi)
Not the Gigi who fears to be honest because I want you to like me. (You are enough, Gigi)
Not the Gigi who lives with shame and guilt. (God loves you always, Gigi)
In my research and study, I’ve devoured many books, spent hours in counseling and listened to more teaching CD’s than I can count. I could probably wallpaper my living room with the jackets of the CD’s I’ve heard.
Now it’s time to share what I’ve learned.
It is my hope that in sharing, I will grab your hand and take you along this journey with me to whole hearted living.
Recently I read three books written by Dr. Brene Brown. Daring Greatly Cover

Gifts of Imperfection CoverI’ve also listened to several of her audio CD’s and watched her TED Talks. If you don’t know her work, please check it out. It has been life changing for me.

In the next several months, I want to start some courageous conversations about all that I’ve come to know in the last several years.

I thought it was just me cover

I pray you will join in this courageous conversation. And together we can live the life God created us to live for such a time as this. I believe the world is waiting for us to be courageous.
So let’s have a courageous conversation.
Bless your courageous heart,
Gigi

Moon Gazer – A Tribute to a Friend

by Gigi April 23, 2013
written by Gigi
Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign Lord comes escape from death. Psalm 68:19-21

I’ve been thinking about life and death this week.
I’ve been reminiscing about fun times with our dear friend, Bob Schmidt, who lost his courageous battle on Sunday, April 21, 2013 to the ugliness of brain cancer.
I hate cancer. It steals from families. It robs from love.
Kim and BobBob and his wife, Kim, were our neighbors for many years. Our boys grew up together. Soccer matches, baseball games, camping trips, fireworks extravaganzas, backyard barbecues and great conversation are all part of my memories of life with the Schmidt family.
Bob was a firefighter with the Kent, WA Fire Station 71. He was a devoted servant in that job.
He was a loving husband, a proud father, and a good friend.
Wasn’t it just yesterday that we were all enjoying the pyrotechnic abilities Bob brought to every 4th of July?
Has it really been that long ago that Bob encouraged Zane and Gabe down the water slides in Lake Chelan?
It feels like just last week that Bob helped Steve build our deck. We laughed watching two determined men build the strongest deck in the neighborhood.
Where has all the time gone? The years got away from us didn’t they.
Bob and Kim moved and we lost touch for a few years.
Never far from our heart, but not involved in daily life activities anymore.
And then cancer struck.
As soon as we heard, we were drawn back into their lives and it felt as if we never left.
Bob and Kim were so brave during his ten-month battle with glioblastoma cancer.
Believing.
Fighting.
Never giving up.
But there was a plan that was different than ours.
Bob’s in heaven now.
The story of his journey has touched my heart deeply. I’ll be writing about it in my journal for a long time to come.
Kim told us how she and Bob would gaze at the moon. He’d be working at the fire station in Kent. She and the boys were at their home in Woodinville.
“Kimmer, are you looking at the moon?”, Bob would ask over the phone. Nine times out of ten, Kim was looking at the the same time.
Though distance kept them apart, they gazed at the moon and talked before each of them called it a day.
This story of love sent across the miles makes me smile.
When the news from the doctors wasn’t good, Kim asked this question. “I wonder how many more moons we’ll gaze at together?”
Moon Gazer
Tomorrow night the moon will be full. The weather here in Seattle is clear. We will see it and think of Bob. I’ll never look at it the same again.
In the light in the dark night, I’ll remember a friend who touched so many lives.
I’ll smile to know he loved well and was well loved. I am thankful for Jesus and heaven – knowing I’ll see Bob in eternity.
And I sure hope we get to be neighbors again.
Bob, we will miss your smile. But we know your light shines on.
Will you pray with me for the Schmidt and Parker families? I know a few broken hearts who could use your prayers.
God bless your heart,
Gigi

The Fun Has Begun!

by Gigi February 16, 2013
written by Gigi

And they’re off! The first of my Lenten Love Letters were mailed this week!

Have you written yours?
For me, the fun has truly begun.
I’ve already heard from one recipient – reminding me that an encouraging word in due season brings joy to the receiver.
The walk to the post office might be the best part of sending out encouraging notes–because I am out of shape!
I have to admit, the winter was not good for my body.  I need to shed more than a few pounds.
Actually, I need an extreme makeover in more areas than my physical body.
As part of this makeover, I’m also working on being a better communicator.

I grew up in a family of ten kids. I never learned to speak up for myself. Really, who hears you with that many voices competing to be heard?
For me it was easier to do what I was told and be quiet. That can be a recipe for disaster in relationships.
I’m learning to use my voice. And thanks to Godly wisdom and council, I’m making progress.
Some days it goes over well and other days it feels like an epic fail.
So I search for answers.
This week I dove head first into the extreme makeover manual – The Bible.
I joined Margaret Feinberg in a challenge to read the entire Bible in 40 days.
I decided I could accomplish this goal if I listen on my iPhone with my You Version Bible. I like the man’s voice in the ESV Version. He brings the words to life.
He talks to me while I get ready in the morning, during breakfast, and on my commute to and from work. With 45 minutes of listening per day, I will have the entire Bible “read” by Easter Sunday.
That’s right! The whole enchilada.
If you want to join me, Margaret has created an easy to follow plan. Click HERE for the PDF.
How about you? What areas of your life need a little makeover? Share with me and we’ll pray together, linking arms as we work on areas that need some help.
And maybe I’ll send you some encouraging Scripture or a little note to help you along the way.
God Bless your heart!
Gigi

Lent – A Season of Preparing Your Heart for Easter

by Gigi February 8, 2013
written by Gigi

Bless you, my friend!
I can’t believe it’s been more than a month since I added a note here.
It’s good to be back. I’ve missed you.
I can’t believe next Wednesday, February 13th, is Ash Wednesday.
This day, on the traditional liturgical calendar begins the forty-day count down to Easter.
The purpose of this season is to reflect on the forty days Jesus fasted in the wilderness before He began His public ministry.
I’ve always viewed it as a time of reflection and preparation as I give my time to others.
A season of examining one’s heart and spending time with the Lord in confession and repentance.
I love this season.
Not only for the focus on Jesus preparation for the cross, but also because it is spring time.
The gray of the winter gives way to bluer skies and greener grass.
The birds come home to build their nests.
The leaves sprout and the early flowers bloom.
This year, I’m especially looking forward to spring, Easter and new beginnings.
It’s been a long hard winter of my soul. How about you? Are you ready for spring too?
I write encouragement to others as a way to lift my spirits when I feel down in the dumps.  I hope you’ll try it!
This week I’m asking God to help me create my Lenten Love Letter List.
This is a list of people God puts on my heart during the days leading up to Easter. I simply pray and ask God, “Who needs a kind word of encouragement today?”
It has been amazing to see how it all works out.
Will you join me this year in a focused period of writing encouragement to people who cross your path?
Let’s do this together as we prepare our hearts for Easter.
I can see the ripple of encouragement that will send waves across the world.
Are you in?
Leave me a note in the comments and together we will celebrate the power of a kind word.
God bless your heart with encouragement.
Gigi
PS – I’m praying that God will let me know if its YOU who needs the encouragement.
